It cannot tell you a deck is safe. What fails most often is not in the frame: the ledger behind the siding, the footing under the post.
The ten-minute walkthrough finds what a camera cannot: the post base that gives under a screwdriver, the railing that moves when you push it. And when you're past worrying and into wanting, see your future deck shows what the same photo could become.
- Fill the frame with what worries you, then take a second shot from a few steps back.
- Use the flash under the deck. Post bases and joist hangers are always in shade.
- Put a hand or a tape measure next to a crack or gap, for scale.
